The arts standards reflect the innate creativity and rigorous cognition, required to produce a work of art, all students deserve to experience. The standards challenge the elitist perception sometimes associated with the arts, asking all students to stretch their thinking and participate in the creative process inherent in each arts discipline (Know/Comprehend, Create, Perform/Present, and Refine/Critique).

Important Announcements

2020 Visual and Performing Arts Standards

Visit the main Office of Standards and Instructional Support page for available resources supporting education professionals across the state in implementing the Colorado Academic Standards. From the main page, you can plan for 2020 standards implementation and access support for transition from the 2009 to the 2020 Colorado Academic Standards for Visual and Performing Arts. The CDE-developed implementation materials include a transition timeline and newly released Professional Learning Modules. You can also interact with the 2020 standards online and browse the 2020 standards downloads. Current features of 2020 standards online include the ability to create a customized view based on selections of content areas, grade level, and standards categories. The customized view creates a specific link that you can then share with your colleagues. The 2020 standards downloads provides PDF versions (among other formats) of the standards by content area and summaries of the changes made during the revision process.

Arts Education in Colorado: Guidebook & Resources (2nd ed.)

The Arts Education in Colorado: Guidebook & Resources was written to provide Colorado schools and districts with research-based information and best practices to support the ongoing development of their visual and performing arts programs. Since the first edition was published in 2011, the arts have been increasingly recognized as an important strategy in keeping students in school and in best preparing them for the workforce of tomorrow.  The 2018 update of the guidebook compiles existing and new references to research studies, arts organization websites, and other useful resources for strengthening a school or district arts program. Each section contains hyperlinks that when clicked, will take readers directly to the source material.  We hope that this guidebook will prove useful to educators and their arts partners across Colorado, help to inform the expansion and sustainability of quality arts programs, and result in a vibrant, creative and engaging education for all students.
