HESTL Rubrics and Applications

HESTL Library Paraprofessional Rubrics

HESTL candidates submit evidence that demonstrates accomplished and exemplary practice in each of the four areas of school library paraprofessional practice: Engagement, Collaboration, Environment, and Management. Library paraprofessionals who earn all four credentials achieve the Highly Effective Library Paraprofessional recognition. The program is self-paced and candidates can apply for one or more credentials during a school year.

Engagement Credential Application

Collaborate with the school community to develop and review the library program vision and goals.
Organize and lead activities and programming; create community partnerships.

Collaboration Credential Application

Build relationships with the school community; collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate library skills instruction.
Reflect on data to increase students' library skills; promote print and digital resources.

Create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning space that fosters curiosity and flexibly accommodates the needs of the school community.

Management Credential Application

Build an appealing, balanced and inclusive library collection that aligns with curriculum and school goals, reflects students’ needs and interests, and is guided by input from the school community.
Implement a weeding plan and educate the school community about the importance of weeding and following district policy related to the removal of library materials.
Engage in professional development to learn evolving best practices in collection management.
