The Colorado Comprehensive School Asthma Program/AsthmaCOMP and program partners are proud to recognize the following schools for creating an asthma-friendly school that promotes asthma best practices for students with asthma and a healthy environment for all students and staff.

What is a “Colorado Asthma-Friendly School”?
A school recognition as a “Colorado Asthma-Friendly School” demonstrates the use of a comprehensive approach to asthma management that:
- Uses a coordinated school community response to asthma management
- Increase students’ and families’ access to quality school health supports
- Support students’ well-being, self-management, and long-term health outcomes
- Improves student attendance
- Improves academic achievement
- Increases opportunities for students disproportionately affected by asthma
- Decreases costly emergency room visits for families
- Improves environmental health for all school community members
Colorado Asthma Friendly Schools incorporate four strategies that:
- Maximize the delivery of school health services
- Build asthma education
- Provide a healthy school environment
- Manage physical education and activity
Why does the Colorado Asthma Friendly School Recognition matter?
- This initiative recognizes schools that have made significant efforts to support their school community with asthma-friendly practices.
- The benefits of being recognized as a Colorado Asthma-Friendly School include:
- An acknowledgment of the school’s commitment to prioritizing asthma-friendly practices
- Strengthening the school’s asthma management collaboration
- Building trust with parents and community members
- Celebrating the achievements of the school community
How does it work?
- A self-assessment checklist including the four strategies and related activities is completed by schools seeking designation. This is used to determine the level of recognition for Colorado Asthma-Friendly School Designation: Gold, Silver, or Bronze.

School Staff / Unlicensed Assistive Personnel Asthma Trainings
- The Medication Administration Training for Schools & Childcare (MAT course) includes an asthma module for UAPs that can be taken with the full course or as a stand-alone module. UAPs are encouraged to work with your school nurse to receive the training they recommend.
