Analyzing and Responding to State Assessment Data
Colorado’s suite of state content assessments (CMAS, CO-ALT, PSAT/SAT) measure students’ mastery of Colorado Academic Standards. Colorado also administers the WIDA ACCESS test to assess English Language proficiency of students who are identified as English learners. This page is designed to centralize resources to help school and district staff understand and analyze data from these assessments and determine appropriate next steps to inform their school improvement efforts.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 data from across the state may not be able to be used in all of the ways they have in prior years. Participation rates were generally lower in 2021 than in pre-pandemic years. CMAS was structured differently (e.g., ELA was administered in grades 3, 5 and 7; math was administered in grades 4, 6 and 8).
Despite the unprecedented circumstances, these data serve as an important indicator of current student achievement and growth, as well as providing insight into student groups who may have been differentially impacted by COVID-19 conditions.
As always, district and school staff are encouraged to consider multiple data points and sources of information when making determinations regarding student learning and plans for instruction.
